Archeological Sites and Monuments in Sithonia

There are also enchanting locations in Sithonia for those fascinated by history and archeology and those who are simply interested in combining quality holidays with site-seeing and expanding their knowledge.

Let’s travel through time, from the prehistoric ages to the 19th century, in this magnificent place.

Really close to the village of Agios Nikolaos, within walking distance, you can come across the prehistoric acropolis of “Vetrino” hill, where you will enjoy a stunning view, as well as the Siggos and the Pyrgos settlement, constructed as in prehistoric times. If you find yourself in Sykia, don’t forget to pay a visit to the settlement of Koukos, a place that attracted its inhabitants due to its rich copper resources, but also the prehistoric burial mound of “Kriaritsi”, built in the same era.

Moving on with our journey, the next stop is the ancient city of Toroni and the castle of Lekythos, both very significant places in Antiquity, firstly for the Chalkidians and then for the Athenians, the Spartans, the Persians, the Macedonians, and the Romans – who took it over last- but important also later on, during the Byzantine times.

In Toroni, you can find the traces of a paleochristian temple, the temple of Agios Athanasios, and in Nikiti the paleochristian basilica of Sofronios, both destroyed by fire in the 6th century A.D., leaving behind significant findings for the generations to come.

We reach our final destination, the 19th century. Don’t forget to visit the windmills of Sykia and Nikiti, protected as monuments of folk architecture, and learn how this evolved through time by visiting the gristmill of Vatsios, in Nikiti. At the same places, worth seeing, are two old primary school buildings, points of reference for the architecture of that century. Especially in Nikiti, in this building, the Folklore Museum is hosted, in case you wish to dive deeper into the culture.
