Sithonia extends into the Aegean Sea, in the north of Greece which makes it an ideal place to produce high-quality wines. Sithonia’s climate is typically the Mediterranean with long hot summers and short mild winters. Also, its hills provide great conditions for growing beautiful juicy grapes to produce high-quality wines.ย  The soil is nutrient-rich and has low water retention.

Some of the most famous white wines on Sithonia are made from Moschofilero and Robiola grapes.

The main red wines made in Sithonia are Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Limnio, a well-known local red wine, comes from a native variety, long ago mentioned in Aristotle’s writings.

Sithonia’s key wine region is its western coastal section which includes the biggest Porto Carras vineyards and some smaller villages producing wines made from different varieties of grapes.

You can take a day trip to visit the vineyards, explore wine cellars and enjoy local wines paired with traditional tasty food.

Domaine Porto Carras

The vineyard on the โ€œSlopes of Melitonโ€ is one of the largest in Europe and a model organic viticultural unit. It is the largest organic vineyard in Greece with 28 grape varieties. After experimental plantings at 300-400m altitude, the possibilities of the Malagouzia were recognized and they began producing high quality, high aromatic, and balanced wines.

Among the red wines, the famed Greek Limnio variety is exceptional along with French varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Syrah, which have adapted wonderfully to the cool north-eastern slopes of the region.

Donโ€™t hesitate to pair your Sithonia wine experience with the other two legs of Halkidiki – Kassandra, and Athos where you will find more wine choices of this divine nectar.
