Nicholas Samaras filmed Lionfish in Porto Koufo

The Lionfish, or ‘Tropical Lionfish’ as it is officially known, was spotted by underwater photographer Nicholas Samaras for the second time on Chalkidiki. However, this time Nicholas capture this particular species of fish in Sithonia, at Porto Koufo.

In his personal post, he adds that although there have only been sporadic and isolated reports of the fish’s presence thus far, it is beginning to occur more frequently. There is, therefore, no concern at this moment for the local marine ecology, although this may change in the future. Lionfish provide excellent subjects for photographs until then.

Lionfish (Pterois) is a genus of toxic marine fish from the stingray family that originated in the Indo-Pacific. Lionfish earned their name from their spines, which resemble those of a lion. They are distinguished by a visible palette of cautionary hues. Their bodies are striped in red, white, beige, yellow, orange, or black, and their fins have deadly spines.
