A seismic tremor of 4.9 magnitude struck Mount Athos earlier today, sending vibrations across the Halkidiki region. The earthquake, which occurred at 10:34 AM, was particularly noticeable in the surrounding areas and was accompanied by a rumbling sound.
According to the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter was located 11 kilometers northwest of Karyes, the main settlement of Mount Athos, with a focal depth of 14.4 kilometers. The tremor was felt widely across Halkidiki, but no significant damage has been reported so far.
Earlier seismic activity in the region included a smaller 3.8 magnitude quake at 10:12 AM, located near the epicenter of the 4.9 magnitude tremor, with a depth of 15 kilometers. A third, even smaller quake measuring 3.1 magnitude occurred at 11:07 AM.
Authorities have not reported any injuries or substantial damage, but residents remain alert to any aftershocks that might follow. Seismologists are continuing to monitor the situation in this historically and religiously significant area.
