The Halkidiki Archaeological Service and the Holy Mount Athos are proud to announce an intriguing event set to take place on October 31, 2023, at 6:00 PM at the Archaeological Museum of Polygyros. This symposium, titled “Digital Heritage: Tracing Halkidiki from Prehistory to Historical Eras”, is part of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at preserving and showcasing the rich cultural history of the region.
The Discovery of Halkidiki’s Digital Footprint
The primary goal of this symposium is to unveil the results of the project titled “Population Movements and Material Culture: Digitizing Halkidiki from Prehistory to Historical Times.” This project is part of the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation” (EPAnEK) for the 2014-2020 period, co-funded by the European Structural and Investment Funds and implemented by the Halkidiki Archaeological Service and the Holy Mount Athos. The successful completion of this initiative represents a significant qualitative upgrade in digital access, presentation, promotion, and management of the rich cultural heritage of Halkidiki, adding value through the development of modern digital tools and applications ready for public use.
Preserving the Past: A Journey of Discovery
The symposium will commence by briefly presenting the activities leading up to the creation of the digital applications, including the preservation, documentation, and recording of a vast array of archaeological artifacts stemming from research in the archaeological sites and monuments of Halkidiki.
Interactive Digital Applications for Cultural Exploration
Subsequently, attendees will be introduced to various interactive digital applications designed to illuminate and promote archaeological sites and monuments. These applications include a digital guide, an online hub, and a digital repository for documenting archaeological artifacts.
The Ancient Olynthos Digital Information Center (AnODIC)
One of the highlights of the event will be the unveiling of the Ancient Olynthos Digital Information Center (AnODIC), featuring multimedia applications such as visual and auditory installations, cartographic displays, a 3D virtual exhibition of artifacts, and an interactive map. These components aim to transform a visit to archaeological sites like Ancient Olynthos into an immersive, multi-sensory experience.
