3.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Mount Athos

A 3.7 magnitude earthquake shook Mount Athos this morning. According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the quake’s epicenter was 11 kilometers northwest of Karyes, Mount Athos, with a focal depth of 13.7 kilometers.

The seismic event occurred at 07:19 local time. It was not strongly felt in the rest of Chalkidiki, but nearby villages in the Municipality of Aristotle experienced some tremors.

The epicenter is approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Sithonia. While this specific earthquake did not cause significant damage or pose immediate danger, residents and visitors in Sithonia should remain aware of the ongoing seismic activity. Basic precautions, such as staying informed about local updates and knowing safe spots in buildings, can be beneficial.

It is worth noting that there has been almost daily seismic activity in this area for the past two weeks, with minor earthquakes mostly below 2.0 magnitude. On July 30 and 31, tremors recorded 3.1 and 3.4 magnitudes, respectively.
