Do you often think how great it would be to be on an isolated and quiet beach right now? If only there were such a thing! Well, there is! In the very south of the Sithonia peninsula, still well hidden away from mass tourism, lies one of the most beautiful beaches in this part of Greece – the beach in the small fishing village of Porto Koufo.
You can get to Porto Koufo beach either from Neos Marmaras or Sarti. It is 25 km from Neos Marmaras and exsect the same as from Sarti.
Although at the very entrance of the Porto Koufo beach there is the Porto Koufo Hotel and several private accommodations, most of the beach is unorganized and perfect for a quiet vacation. The beach is narrow, the sand on the beach is very soft and the water is crystal clear, but you get to a greater depth quite quickly. This makes it perfect for fishing enthusiasts but asks for care when you are there with your kids.
Porto Koufo Beach is about 1 km long, and since there are not so many accommodation facilities nearby, it is generally not crowded. At the west end of the Porto Koufo beach is the small fishing village of Porto Koufo with fish tavernas and a pleasant beach bar, and at the east end is the Porto Koufo Hotel. Everything in between is an unorganized wild and beautiful long beach with soft sand and crystal clear water. To the east of Porto Koufo Hotel is another smaller part of the beach, it is even more hidden.
Porto Koufo (Greek: Πόρτο Κουφό, meaning ‘deaf harbor’) is Greece’s largest natural harbor (in-depth)
Porto Koufo is known in this part of Greece as a village with the best taverns and always fresh fish. Fishermen are constantly active, especially very early in the morning, when you can see them setting sail with their boats and going fishing.
Porto Koufo is the deepest natural harbor in Greece, and on the opposite side of the beach is a large hill that surrounds the harbor, so that makes the impression even more intimate. You almost feel like you are on a mountain lake.
Activities on Porto Koufo Beach
Because this beach reaches deep water quite quickly, it is becoming more and more popular for scuba divers, freedivers, and all diving enthusiasts, as well as underwater photographers and videographers. Ask at the beach bar, hotel, or local tavern about a scuba diving school if you are interested in this type of recreation and adventure.
Porto Koufo beach is a perfect choice if you want to have a good rest and enjoy fresh seafood specialties, but we must mention that you should be careful if you bring children, because of the deep water.
On Porto Koufo beach, you will have the feeling of peace, isolated in nature. Raw nature still dominates this area and leaves you breathless and speechless.
