A Hidden Gem on Aretes Beach, Sithonia
Aretes Beach in Sithonia is a well-known destination for young Greeks from Thessaloniki and the northern part of Greece. Aretes is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Sithonia, hidden in green forests, with crystal-clear waters and breathtaking sunsets. On the northern part of the beach lies Bar-Ba Tolis Beach Bar, a unique destination that combines traditional Greek vibes with lively beach parties on the weekends. Known for its unforgettable parties, authentic food, and soulful music, Bar-Ba Tolis has become a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic Greek experience.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Xeneth Manolof, the owner of Bar-Ba Tolis, to learn more about the story behind this iconic venue and what makes it the go-to spot for beachgoers in Halkidiki.
What’s the Story Behind Bar-Ba Tolis?
Bar-Ba Tolis has been part of Aretes Beach since 2001. Initially, it was a simple refreshment stand serving coffee and soft drinks. Over time, Xeneth and his father transformed it into a unique beach bar and tsipouradiko (a traditional Greek establishment serving tsipouro and appetizers).
“We wanted to create a place that reflects our tastes and preferences, blending music, food, and a relaxed vibe,” says Xeneth. “Bar-Ba Tolis is entirely handmade, from the wooden design to the carefully crafted dishes.”Authentic Greek Vibes: Music, Food, and Parties
At Bar-Ba Tolis, the music takes center stage. Since 2012, the bar has focused on entehno (artistic Greek music) featuring artists like Socratis Malamas, Thanasis Papakonstantinou, and Miltos Paschalidis. Guests are also treated to rebetiko, a traditional Greek music genre that keeps the country’s roots alive.
“Music is the heart of our parties,” says Xeneth. “It’s all about creating an atmosphere where people can feel connected to Greek culture.”Food is another highlight. Guests can enjoy small, handmade dishes (meze), prepared with care and passion. Popular options include fresh seafood, local cheeses, and traditional Greek appetizers, perfectly paired with a glass of tsipouro.
What Makes Bar-Ba Tolis Unique?
- The Perfect Setting: Aretes Beach offers direct access to turquoise waters and stunning natural surroundings. Bar-Ba Tolis blends seamlessly into the environment, thanks to its wooden construction and sustainable design.
- Weekend Vibes vs. Weekday Relaxation: On weekends, the bar comes alive with music, parties, and crowds of visitors. Weekdays offer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere, ideal for unwinding by the beach.
- A Family-Run Legacy: Built and run by Xeneth and his father, Bar-Ba Tolis reflects their shared passion for Greek culture, music, and hospitality.
How Did It Get Its Name?
The name “Bar-Ba Tolis” reflects the venue’s dual identity: a casual beach bar and a tsipouradiko. This combination offers guests a relaxed setting to enjoy drinks and appetizers while soaking in the vibrant Greek atmosphere.
