The Port of Amphipolis (Serres): Alexander the Great and the Forgotten Harbor

Not far from Kasta Hill, where the famous tomb of ancient Amphipolis (Kasta Tomb) was discovered, lies the almost forgotten natural harbor at the mouth of the Strymon River (Struma).

This harbor was once a crucial traffic hub and starting point for significant historical events, including Alexander the Great’s expedition.

The Harbor that Launched Alexander the Great’s Expedition

The harbor at the mouth of the Strymon River (Struma River) was of great strategic and commercial importance in ancient Macedonia. Alexander the Great used it as the starting point for his conquering expedition toward Asia, marking one of the most important moments in history. Due to its natural location, Amphipolis harbor was perfect for embarking ships, facilitating efficient logistics during those great military campaigns.

The Byzantine City of Chrysopolis: Cultural Heritage by the Harbor

In its vicinity lay the Byzantine city of Chrysopolis, a settlement that emerged in the 10th century. The city developed beside the harbor and was an important center for trade, with military fortifications protecting the trade routes. Though minimal, the remains of this fortress testify to the city’s former importance. It’s important to note that this Chryso Polis should not be confused with the modern settlement of Chrysoupoli, located east of Kavala.

Modern Period and the Harbor’s Use During World War II

In the 20th century, the Amphipolis harbor regained its significance, but for military purposes. During World War II, it was used for transporting military supplies to the border fortifications, while military activities were also evident in this area during the 20th century.

Modern Revival and Unfulfilled Plans for Revitalization

Throughout the 2000s, the harbor attempted to revive through various projects, intending to become a center for tourism and commercial activities. One of the most important revitalization attempts was in the 2000s, through the “Application and Modernization of the Amphipolis Fishing Harbor” program, which national and European funds partially funded. This project, worth €860,000, aimed to transform the harbor into a center for tourist boats, as well as trade and transportation activities, which would have boosted the region’s economy.

Neglect and the Current Situation of the Harbor

Although there were ambitions for revitalization, the harbor today looks completely neglected. Former modern facilities, such as the pier, fueling stations, electrical installations, and even tourist facilities and recreational boats, are now destroyed. The infrastructure is in poor condition, and previous attempts at revitalization have not yielded the expected results. The harbor entrance is blocked by sand, and the harbor itself is entirely abandoned.

Conclusion: Potential for the Future

Society is aware of the historical importance of this harbor, but unfortunately, insufficient investment has been made in its recovery. Although it was once an important point for military, trade, and cultural exchange, today it is almost forgotten. More investment and political will are needed to bring it back to life, as this historical heritage could once again become a valuable part of tourism and culture, not only for Northern Greece but for the entire region.
