Halkidiki, Pieria, Thessaloniki, and Thassos have emerged as the standout tourist destinations this summer, showing positive trends in the season’s early months, according to ELSTAT’s latest statistics. These regions have enjoyed a significant boost in tourism, particularly in the food and accommodation sectors.
Halkidiki Leads the Way in Tourism Growth
In Halkidiki, the hospitality sector recorded a 4% increase in revenue in July 2024, with total earnings reaching €56.57 million compared to €54.4 million in the same month last year. Even more impressive, June saw a 24.9% surge in revenue, hitting €34.03 million. This remarkable growth reflects Halkidiki’s enduring appeal as a premier summer destination, drawing visitors from Greece and abroad. Sandy beaches of Sithonia, along with an increasingly better and affordable accommodation offer (compared to Greek islands), continue to boost Halkidiki’s popularity as a summer destination for tourists worldwide.
Pieria and Thassos Experience Strong Growth
Pieria also performed exceptionally well in July, with a revenue increase of 8.7%, totaling €13.53 million. Thassos followed closely behind, boasting a 9.5% rise in revenue in the same month, bringing in €13.66 million. Interestingly, Thassos nearly doubled its earnings from June, when revenue stood at €7.88 million. Both destinations have benefited from increased visitor numbers and strong demand for accommodations and dining experiences.
Thessaloniki’s Consistent Growth in Hospitality
Thessaloniki continues to be a vital hub for tourism, with the city’s hospitality sector showing a 6.1% rise in turnover in July, reaching €145.45 million. June was also positive for Thessaloniki, with a total turnover of €104.99 million, marking a 1.5% growth compared to June 2023. As a major urban center with a rich history and vibrant culture, Thessaloniki remains a favorite destination for both domestic and international tourists.
Mixed Results for Kavala Amid Tourism Season
On the other hand, Kavala experienced a 1.2% decline in revenue during July, with total earnings of €6.23 million. Despite a strong start in June, the mid-summer season brought challenges for Kavala’s hospitality industry. However, the region remains optimistic, as efforts to attract more tourists continue through targeted marketing campaigns and improved services.
Nationwide Increase in Tourism Revenue
Across Greece, the tourism sector achieved a 5.4% increase in revenue in July, with the total turnover reaching €2.15 billion, compared to €2.04 billion in July 2023. This national growth reflects the overall positive trend in tourist arrivals and spending. Furthermore, July’s revenues were 11.6% higher than in June, when the total turnover was €1.65 billion, underscoring the strength of Greece’s summer tourism industry.
