The Evzoni border crossing into Greece is currently closed following a fire that broke out shortly after noon in a nearby grassy area. Greek media reports that 22 firefighters and a helicopter are actively working to extinguish the blaze. As a result, the road to Customs is closed, with traffic police redirecting vehicles to alternative routes.
On Wednesday, July The 17th 2024, vehicles were unable to cross the Evzones Customs Office border between Greece and North Macedonia due to a midday fire near the “Tsoliades” area. The blaze, affecting farmland and grassland, prompted a swift response with 39 firefighters, including two ground teams, 12 fire engines, and a water-dropping helicopter deployed to combat it.
To aid ground firefighting efforts, authorities closed the Athens-Thessaloniki-Evzoni motorway from the Polykastro bridge to the Evzones customs office. Traffic heading north was redirected via Polykastro. Border customs on the adjacent country’s side barred entry into Greece temporarily to facilitate firefighting.
Normal traffic at the border post will resume upon clearance from Greek authorities.
