Toroneos Gulf Challenge 2025: Konstantinos Zachariadis Triumphs in Grueling 55th Open-Water Crossing (PHOTO/VIDEO)

Nikiti, Sithonia โ€“ July 26, 2025

The 55th International Swimming Crossing of the Toroneos Gulf took place today under dramatic conditions, with fierce winds and waves reaching up to 6 on the Beaufort scale. The extreme weather pushed athletes to their limits and forced three swimmers to abandon the race โ€” a stark reminder of the event’s raw and unpredictable nature.

Despite the punishing sea, Konstantinos Zachariadis from Thessaloniki emerged as the undisputed winner, completing the approximately 26-kilometer crossing in an impressive 6 hours and 54 minutes. Known for his experience in open-water swimming, Zachariadis maintained a steady pace from start to finish, drawing loud applause as he reached the finish line in Nikiti.

A Battle Against Nature

This year’s race was one of the most challenging in recent memory. With strong headwinds and constant swells across the Gulf of Toroneos, the swimmers faced not only a test of endurance but of mental resilience. Out of the 20 participants, three were forced to withdraw mid-race due to the demanding conditions.

Young Talent from Cyprus

In a stunning performance, 16-year-old Alexandros Nourou from Ayia Napa, Cyprus, claimed second place with a time of 7 hours and 12 minutes. His maturity, stamina, and calm under pressure impressed spectators and organizers alike, marking him as a rising star in the world of long-distance swimming.
