Porto Koufo
Porto Koufo is a village in the South of Sithonia in Toroneos Bay. It has a long history and it is the deepest natural harbor in Greece. It was even mentioned by the historian Thucydides in his works. Porto Koufo is one of the few remaining villages with a very low rate of permanent residents.
Porto Koufo means “deaf port” because it is protected so that the sound of the sea could not be heard. It is only a few kilometers away from the larger town of Toroni, and Porto Koufo is part of the Porta (fortification) that protected Toroni from pirates.
Porto Koufo Port
Porto Koufo has a very long history due to its geographical features. It served as a shelter for Turkish pirates and was even used by Germans as a submarine hideout during world war II. A 1.5 km Porto Koufo beach has fine sand and crystal clear water. The sea is always calm but it gets deep quickly. Behind the beach, you can see high rocks reaching the sky so the whole ambiance might feel like you are on a lake.
The village of Porto Koufo is an ideal destination for those who like nature and solitude. There aren’t many tourist facilities and activities but Porto Koufo offers a beautiful pedestrian road along the port and the beach, some traditional taverns where you can taste fresh fish and other Sithonia specialties, and some small grocery shops. In the port, you can rent a boat or enjoy the view of luxurious yachts docked there.
Nearby, you can enjoy snorkeling as there are reefs and underwater caves (like Erica), where you can see an old pirate ship 35 m under the surface. You can take a boat and explore other amazing features of southern Sithonia or go hiking and climb Kapros to enjoy the breathtaking view of the bay.

Porto Koufo, a hidden gem nestled on the western coast of Sithonia, boasts a fascinating history that has remained largely undiscovered by the masses. The name "Koufo" means "deep" in Greek, and indeed, Porto Koufo is one of the deepest natural harbors in the world, reaching a depth of 110 meters.
The harbor's deep waters have served as a refuge for sailors and fishermen throughout history. In ancient times, Porto Koufo was a strategic naval base for the city-state of Toroni, which controlled much of the surrounding area. Later, during the Byzantine era, Porto Koufo became an important commercial port, exporting goods such as salt, fish, and wine to other parts of the Byzantine Empire.
During the Ottoman occupation of Greece, Porto Koufo was used as a base for pirates who would attack passing ships. The harbor's deep waters and rocky terrain made it difficult for enemy ships to navigate, making it an ideal location for these seafaring bandits. It wasn't until the early 20th century that the Greek navy finally put an end to piracy in the area.
Today, Porto Koufo is a quiet fishing village that attracts travelers seeking an authentic Greek experience. Its crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, and delicious seafood restaurants make it a popular destination for those seeking to escape the crowds and indulge in the simple pleasures of life.
But despite its tranquil beauty, the history of Porto Koufo still resonates throughout the village, with reminders of its past visible in its ancient ruins, crumbling fortresses, and charming fishing boats bobbing in the harbor. As travelers explore this hidden gem, they can't help but be transported back in time, imagining the battles and legends that have taken place in this deep and mysterious harbor.
