Sarti
Sarti is one of those places that will remain in your mind after only one visit! And that is the main reason why it’s becoming increasingly popular. It’s a picturesque coastal village with a long sandy beach and crystal clear sea attracting thousands of holidaymakers.
Sarti is a village on the east side of Sithonia, Halkidiki, about 140 km from Thessaloniki. It is divided into two parts- old Sarti and new Sarti and together they are one of the most popular places on this leg, for all the good reasons.
Sarti Beach Length Extends Along 3 km
The first reason is definitely an amazing, 3km-long, sandy beach all along the village. Not only is it long but it is also very wide so it is never crowded. There are many beach bars and other facilities for visitors to enjoy beach activities all day long. Choose from sailing, cycling, paddleboarding, and diving, to touring small manufacturers, etc.
Apart from its amazing beach, Sarti has a lot more to offer: taverns, bars, and cafes where you can taste local and international specialties. Moreover, whether it is from the climate, the surroundings, or the people, the spirit of the village and good vibes can always be felt in the air.
History of Sarti
Sarti got its name from its founder – King Sartios. Even the famous historian Herodotus mentions a village named Sarti in the 5th century BC when Persian king Xerxes travelled through it on his quest. The ruins of that old village can be seen above the Sykia bay today. After the devastating Greek-Turkish war in 1922, all the Greeks from Asia Minor were forced to leave their homes and became refugees, searching for their luck in today’s Greece. Some of them chose Chalkidiki and renewed the settlement of Sarti because it reminded them of their home. At first they were accommodated in the nearby monastery but, being hard-working people, soon they started fishing and bit by bit built a nice fishing village that would one day become one of the most popular tourist destinations on Halkidiki.
